Samsung Reclaim

The new Samsung Reclaim cell phone which is the result of a Samsung and Sprint announcement has the claim to fame as being created from 80% recyclable materials. Though this is not an unlocked cell phone quad we thought it highly worthy of mention because of the impressive effort made towards green environmental responsibility on the part of these two companies.

The eco-friendly Reclaim cell phone is derived from 40% bio-plastic made from corn. Bio-plastics offer biological degradability which means that they are truly disposable in the sense that unlike other plastics they will degrade naturally as essentially organic waste.

The printed materials including the box and other paperwork is printed with soy-based inks. In contrast to petroleum-based ink it is much more environmentally friendly offering a natural substitute. These inks actually offer noticeably brighter colors and contribute to a much easier process when it comes time to recycling the papers which have the inks on them.

Features include favorites such as the slide-down Qwerty keypad which offers intuitive, efficient, and ergonomic performance levels for its users and is the most popular choice around the globe. Also included with the phone are Sprint Navigation GPS and stereo Bluetooth which should be familiar territory for many users.

Network support of 3G data networks, web browser, email client and one click access to MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and the Discovery Channel are among the other popular features the Samsung Reclaim offers.

The built-in 2 megapixel camera has a 3X zoom and has the ability to record video. For storage needs there is a microSD slot which is a must have these days especially if you are recording video with your cell phone.

The cell phone charger complies with environmental standards as well offering a visual indicator which alerts the user to the fact that the phone has completed its charge so that you can unplug it from the power source once again saving energy. The lithium ion batteries are reported to offer up to 6 hours of talk time.

Among the various optional accessories the green theme continues on including a solar-powered battery charger. Now this is getting interesting. Apparently 2 dollars from the cell phone purchase will be donated to the Nature Conservancy program.

The phone comes in both Earth Green and Ocean Blue colors. Sprint claims that this is the beginning of a company wide initiative to become known world wide as the environmentally friendly or green cell phone service provider. Although this is not an unlocked quad band cell phone we do appreciate the great details which both Sprint and Samsung have put into the design of this mobile phone.

Samsung has recently announced their new green management initiative which will establish an aggressive set of goals as the company seeks to become a leading force in eco-friendly products within the industry.

There will be a strong focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their manufacturing facilities by half by the year 2013. This will likely include not only cell phones but all products manufactured by Samsung.
